We suggest using a new technique when you plant container trees and shrubs. To ensure fast root development in the new planting site, slice thin slabs off the outside of the root ball just before you place the new plant in the planting pit. Use an old hand saw or a pruning saw to slice thin sections off the root ball, sort of like peeling an apple. This step will slab off most of the matted roots that have gathered against the pot. The new severed root ends, created in this planting step, will quickly develop new roots out into the new planting site!
