An excellent way to reduce damage from apple worms (coddling moth larvae) is to trap the adult moths. A gallon jar baited with a 1:10 water and molasses solution will trap both male and female moths. Pheremone traps only attract male moths and provide no control. Coarse screening (1/4”X1/4” Hardware cloth) should be added to opening in jar to exclude visiting honey bees. Since young caterpillars need leverage to help them cut into the fruit, many of them enter at a point where two fruits are touching. Thinning the apples to avoid touching reduces the survival rate of the delicate young larvae and controls damage to remaining fruit.
