Mother Nature is a changeable lady in our mountainous region and cold nights can occur at almost any time of the year. Although many times NOAA will issue Frost or Freeze Watches or Warnings, many times they don’t, so we will try to email one out on any night when dangerously cold temperatures are expected. However, we realize that microclimates exist within our growing area so the best way for you to protect your garden is to keep an eye on the weather yourself. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the spring when you’ve just planted your garden, a cold spell during the summer months, or in the fall if you still want to squeak that last killer zucchini out before the hard freeze, these tips and tricks should help you protect your plants!
  • Cover your garden plants using a sheet, newspaper, or a blanket. Use poles or another kind of support to keep them from harming the plants. A blanket or sheet seems to work the best because you can anchor the corners to keep it from blowing off in our Wyoming winds.
  • Please don’t use plastic to cover your plants. Many people don’t realize it, but plastic transfers cold quickly, has no insulating properties, and may do more harm than good. Walls O Water and Hot Kaps are fine choices though.
  • Row cover or agribond are good choices for covering tender plants as well.
  • If you have access to water, use irrigation water or a sprinkler set to come on as early as 3-4 am then let it run until the sun comes up. Water works by forming a layer of ice that protects the foliage underneath. This works best when a frost is expected, but may not for a hard freeze.
  • If your plants are nipped by the cold, give them time to recover. Most plants may lose some leaves, but the roots will sprout new growth in a few days.
  • Be sure to drain bird baths, hoses, fountains, etc to avoid having them freeze and crack.
  • We are happy to help so stop in or call us at (307) 856-6663 if you have any questions about specific plants.”
