Sweetwater Garden Planting Guide
When do I plant what?
Vegetables
Early Crops: (Mid March through early May)
Root vegetables - Late March, early April (Beets, carrots, radishes, onion bulbs, potatoes, turnips etc)
Peas - Mid-March (St. Patrick's Day). Includes Sweet Peas!
Cole Crops - Mid to late April (Cabbage, kale, broccoli, spinach, lettuce etc.)
Pansies - Anytme from mid march on, they will have to be protected from hard frosts (below 30F)
Petunias - Early to Mid-May, protect from hard frosts.
Late Crops - After May 20th.... but it's always a gamble!
All annual flowers
Heat loving vegetables (Tomatoes, peppers, squash, pumpkins, corn, etc.)
For early birds there are ways to fool Mother Nature. Use clear plastic to warm up the soil temperatures prior to planting. Use floating row covers to protect from late frost.
Perennials
Potted perennials - plant these anytime when the ground is not frozen or too wet.
Roots, tubers, and bulbs - Varies by species, best to consult planting instructions.
Seed - Varies by species, consult seed packages.
Trees & Shrubs
